Beaver facts

Beavers engineer dams and lodges that transform environments: By blocking streams with simple materials, they create deep ponds. These structures offer immense ecological benefits. The resulting ponds form vital wetlands that increase biodiversity by attracting diverse wildlife. Additionally, these dams act as natural filters to purify water, while the stored moisture protects landscapes against droughts and wildfires.

Beavers have a built-in pair of "swimming goggles." Their eyes are protected by a transparent third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, which allows them to see underwater while keeping their eyes protected. They can also close their ears and nostrils when diving, helping them stay underwater for up to around 15 minutes — turning them into surprisingly capable underwater engineers.
